November Newsletter

Hello All,

Thanks for keeping in touch! It means so much to me to hear from all of you!  Don’t be shy – I do write back and enjoy your e-mails and comments!  My newsletter this month is about responsibility and the television.

First of all, don’t you just want to turn off the TV these days? We survived the elections and I keep this web site non-partisan but I hope everyone is proud of John McCain for being a gracious and conciliatory role- model. And I hope everyone is prepared to lend their support and prayers to our new President Elect, Barack Obama.

I was watching the TV this morning and saw a “news show “on obese teens.  It was meant to alarm and get our attention. It did that. You have heard me speak on kid and teen health for many years and the alarming epidemic of obesity and the health problems associated with being obese.

Today, the show the illustrated the similarity between the arteries of an obese 13 year-old and the arteries of a 45 year-old. The plaque in the arterial walls looked the same. The sad message here is that our overweight kids are aging prematurely and will experience the same health problems that our culture usually deals with in middle age.

Of course the immediate conclusion at the end of the show was that these youngsters will be candidates for medication: the same medication with the same side effects that our older generations have been dealing with.

Immediately after the show, there was a commercial for IHOP’s super sized pancakes with whipped cream, chocolate, and some kind of sweet stuff layered in between the pancakes. I felt like I was going into a diabetic episode just watching the commercial!

So, what’s wrong with us?  We have such a disconnect between cause and effect…

When will we, as a culture and as a country, start to be responsible and take seriously our dietary and exercise habits?

Your health means everything to me…  You are my future as I am yours.  We are in this together.  I am committed to helping you stay healthy with simple everyday tips and techniques.

Thanksgiving is coming. Let’s all try to enjoy our families. Breathe to reduce stress! Let’s all practice moderation with the calorie-laden foods and dishes. I promise to limit myself to one piece of pie per meal if you do! Let’s all get moving after the big meal and encourage our families, friends, and neighbors to walk with us!

Remember, moderate exercise, like walking after the big meal, will lower the lipid levels and triglycerides in your blood and improve your digestion.

Educate your kids and grandkids about healthy eating and look critically at the way we accept this super-size-me-culture of ours. We can change this country one family at a time.

Investing in your health is the best stock tip you’ll ever have. Your health translates directly into money saved!

Start today.  Walk briskly for 10 minutes today, swing your arms, breathe, lift your legs!  Treat sugar and fat-laden foods as a treat or a once-in-a-while indulgence.  If you are already exercising daily and eating well, then pass this along and help someone else improve their health!

Simple changes daily will add up to a lifetime of health.  I believe in you.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Isabella
